This was one of the most unique, thoughtful, and inspiring retreats I’ve had the pleasure of attending. The retreat is tucked into the mountains with breathtaking views. Not only did we gain fresh perspectives and have great discussions about writing, but we all gained new knowledge of the Basque culture, ate wonderful Basque Cuisine and wine, and learned of their history. There was so much to soak in and so much inspiration. Diana catered to each of us and made sure all our needs were met. An immeasurable and happy experience.

I highly recommend Diana’s Pyrenean Writing Retreat.  The house is in an unparalleled location with sprawling views of rolling green hills dotted with sheep farms and tiny villages. The retreat was a nice combination of each person having their own space in their room or whatever nook they might occupy and then coming together around craft talks and meals. Delicious meals, and so many nice touches like lap desks to make typing easier, chocolate bars, stories from the local area. All in all an invaluable experience.

There are some weeks you know will stay with you forever and this was one such week. The scenery is stunning,–mists that rise like smoke from a cauldron, the valley before you so beautiful you can’t look away. Yet, what made it truly special for me was the supportive and collaborative writing environment. Diana created a learning space in which everyone felt cared for, stimulated, and encouraged. The sense of community we created together through sharing our work and a good dose of ourselves is one I continue to hold very dear.

Travelling to Pyrenean Writing Retreat

The farmhouse for Pyrenean Writing Retreat lies in Ituren, Navarra, an hour from San Sebastian, Pamplona and Irun. It is also easily accessible by car from Bilbao and Biarritz.

Flight Connections To Northern Spain

From the UK/Europe there are direct flights to Bilbao and Biarritz airports. If you are flying in from the U.S. or other non-European countries, you will have to fly into a major city such as London, Dublin, Paris, Madrid, Frankfurt, etc. and then transfer to Bilbao. Iberia has limited flights directly into the much smaller San Sebastian airport only from Madrid and Barcelona. Flying into the San Sebastian airport will leave you closer to the city, but these flights tend to be more expensive than flights into Bilbao.

Bilbao airport is the largest international airport in the area and has an hourly shuttle to San Sebastian. From the very same bus station in San Sebastian there is a connection to our area either via public transport with the bus company La Baztanesa, or by taxi if you are travelling outside hours. San Sebastian is a glorious city and well worth a few days’ visit at either end of the retreat if you have time.

Arriving from Within Spain

If you are already in Spain or the area, you can  make easy connections to the area from Irun, Bilbao and Pamplona.

By bus: Guests will catch an afternoon bus from either Pamplona or San Sebastian and disembark in the village of Santesteban/Doneztebe, where we will happily pick you up and take you to the farmhouse. From San Sebastian, the La Baztanesa bus in the direction of Elizondo (Navarra) leaves at 16.30 and stops at Irun at 17.00. It arrives at Santesteban/Doneztebe at about 17.45. La Baztenesa also operates a bus from Pamplona. On the final day of the retreat, the bus leaves Santesteban in the direction of San Sebastian/Pamplona around 09.00. We will drop you into the village to catch this bus

Taxi: If you are coming outside of hours, or want to travel in a group. we can arrange for a taxi to pick you up (for an extra charge)  in San Sebastian or Pamplona

Car: For those travelling here by car, PLEASE do not follow the directions given to the house by Google Maps as it takes you up a potholed mountain track to the house. Please ask for a well-tested directions sheet!

About the Area

In a no-man’s land between Spanish Navarra and the Basque Country lie the ‘hobbit-like’ farmlands of the Basque Pyrenees. These tourist-free lands, often known as the ‘Basque Bermuda Triangle’, offer magical walking terrain.

The farmhouse lies at the heart of these landscapes, surrounded by white villages with medieval church spires and terraced fields

Two hundred kilometres of idyllic walks step out straight from our farmhouse door, thanks to a maze of dry-stone walls and bridges built by generations of shepherds, millers, peddlers, and smugglers. When you visit, you won’t need any transport. Just put on your boots at the door and head off north, south, east or west.

Like a lace doily extending out over the hills and dales from the farmhouse, our guests find virtually unlimited walks from the door, and ever-changing landscapes. Basque villages – with restaurants and bars – can also be reached on foot.

The closest village to the farmhouse is Ituren, a small village in the western Pyrenees in the Basque Country in the north of Navarra. The farmhouse is 4 km from the village, high up in a tiny shepherding hamlet of about 20 people and 700 sheep! We are 30 minutes south of the French border, an hour south-west of Biarritz, an hour south-east of the glorious seaside town of San Sebastian and an hour north of the medieval town of Pamplona.

Nearby are the towns of Zubieta and Sunbilla, and the peak of Mendaur, a favorite climbing spot.

Sustainability and Responsible Travel

Pyrenean Writing Retreats adheres to principles of sustainable and responsible travel.

During your stay, you will have immaculate, freshly-laundered bedrooms. We do not operate room service so as to save water, which comes from a nearby spring, but fresh towels are always available on request.

We recycle all waste and compost our leftover food scraps.

We buy, whenever possible, local food. Eggs, courgettes, lettuces, onions, tomatoes, chestnuts, walnuts, and figs often are grown on neighbouring farms, while our sheep and cow cheeses, jams and liqueurs often come from local farmers in the area.

Our Story

Pyrenean Writing Retreats was birthed in 2020 when two authors, one American, one English, discovered that they had much in common, including a desire to partner in the creative arts.

Georgina’s journey to Spain began twenty-five years ago, when with just a map, a jar of marmite, and a box of Earl Grey tea, she journeyed to Navarra and fell in love with the unparalleled beauty of the Tolkeinesque landscape of the Basque Pyrenees. Since then she has lived among the Basque shepherds building her company–Pyrenean Experience–a walking, culture, and language company that has hosted over 1400 guests, received numerous travel awards, and united people from all walks of life.

Diana’s journey to the Basque country started a little earlier, in the late 1980s, when on a rainy October night in San Sebastian, she met a kind Basque man who shepherded her away from some young ruffians at a bar. A romance bloomed, that kind man became her husband, and now, some 35 years later, the two of them make their home in the U.S. and San Sebastian.

When a mutual friend introduced Diana and Georgina, a creative partnership was born, beginning with Diana, an author, editor, and writing instructor, helping Georgina with the final edits of her book, In the Footsteps of Smugglers. When Georgina insisted Diana visit her gorgeous mountain home to thank her in person, Diana took one look at the inspirational views, the colorful decorations and the welcoming atmosphere and said: “You need to have a writing retreat here.”

To which Georgina replied, “Yes, we do.”

Subsequently, over lunch and a bottle of wine, Pyrenean Writing Retreats was born. Central to its core value is that anyone who wants to write deserves to give themselves the time and space to write. Three years later, Pyrenean Writing Retreat is now run independently of Pyrenean Experience, but Diana and Georgina remain close friends and artistic collaborators.

As writers, educators, and travel ambassadors, Diana and Georgina believe strongly in the mission of Pyrenean Writing Retreats:  to provide support and nourishment while helping foster artistic growth to writers at all stages of their careers/journeys. All writers, from those who are first dipping their toes to those who have published, are welcome. Age, experience, and education not important. We also strive to lessen feelings of isolation that writers often feel, by encouraging community at our retreats and continuing after.

Pyrenean Writing Retreats is fully committed to creating safe spaces where everyone, regardless of gender, gender expression, race, ethnicity, national origin, age, sexual orientation or identity, education, or disability, is valued and respected equally.
